Ferse History

The Store was first established in August of 1906 by founder T. B. Fersner, Sr. who was born in 1876 in Orangeburg County.

He was a farmer with two children. He farmed until 1905 and then with $900.00 from the farming and borrowing another $900.00 from the bank, opened then what was called "Fersner's Variety Store". The Store was located approximately where Allied Department Store is now.

• 1915: The store was moved to the banner block.
• 1935: The store was moved and opened where it is located today.
• 1942: The banner block store closed because two sons, Edward M. Fersner and T. B. Fersner, Jr. went into the service.
• 1955: The store was remolded.
• 1972: The store was sold to Santee Wholesale.
• 1985: Mr. Roy Chandler purchased the store and to this day still owns and operates Ferse 5 and 10.

Ferse 5 and 10 was also known as:

• Fersner's 5 To $1.00
• Orangeburg's Home Owned Five and Ten
• Try Fersner's First

Ferse 5 and 10 is one of the oldest, if not the oldest variety store in the country. One of its unique and endearing qualities is the luncheonette. We are still the same today, so come shop and dine with us.
